SUMMER MUSIC PROGRAM INFORMATION

Week One - Jazz Track:

Participants in our Jazz Track will immerse themselves in the jazz tradition, both musically and historically, leaving with a greater understanding of the cultural and musical importance of jazz music.

Jazz ensembles, split by ability and age, will provide an in-depth musical experience, including the study and performance of challenging and sophisticated works from the best jazz composers, including Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Dave Holland and more.

Week One - Vocal Track:

In our Vocal Track, students will embrace the rich tradition of the popular song, learning proper voice techniques that will inform any musical style.  The vocal track will focus primarily on world music, popular, and jazz traditions.

In the Vocal Ensemble, students will learn key techniques for singing in a group setting, including sound, intonation, rhythm, and dynamics.  The Vocal Ensemble will be fun and enriching for participating vocalists.

Week Two - Chamber Music Camp:

Participants in our classical track will immerse themselves in the study and performance of classical music, striving for levels of excellence that the music always demands.

Chamber Music Ensembles will provide classical students  opportunities in ensemble rehearsal and performance.  Students will be organized in small groups, from trios to quintets, and will learn challenging repertoire from the Romantic to Modern eras, all under the coaching of virtuoso performers and educators.

Week Two - Fiddle Camp:

Building on the foundations of the early American fiddlers, singers, banjo players, and guitar strummers, Fiddle Camp participants will learn the foundations of this traditional music, including bow technique, traditional literature, improvisation, and more.

Fiddle students will learn some of the greatest songs in the Southern fiddle tradition.  Students will work as a group in creating distinct and new arrangements of this historical repertoire, perfecting the sounds of this unique, fun, and entertaining musical tradition.

In addition to the main ensemble tracks, all students will participate in daily theory, history, ear training, improvisation, and/or master classes, all presented by national-level performers and educators.

The camp will culminate with a performance by all participating students on Saturday, 7/21/12, for jazz and vocal students, and 7/28/12, for chamber and fiddle students, at the Nueva School.
